Every day, plastic surgery patients all over the world opt to go under the knife with the goal of looking better and feeling more confident—and it’s no secret that they are typically thrilled with their results. That said, patients prefer to limit downtime after surgery, and we are always on the lookout for advances that could make the recovery process faster and easier.

According to a new study highlighted on ZME science, some researchers are saying a new molecular technique could change plastic surgery. We looked into the details to see if it might benefit our patients in the future.

Can electricity reshape your cartilage?

A new “surgical” technique was developed by researchers at Occidental College, and they believe it could offer quicker, office-based nose reshaping for patients in the future. It involves running electricity through cartilage that has been held in place by a 3D-printed mold and thus reshaping the targeted tissues instead of cutting them.

Essentially, when electricity is passed through cartilage, the tissues loosen and become malleable. Once this has happened, the cartilage can be molded into a different shape, which will remain once the cartilage has rehardened. Scientists first discovered this technique while attempting to find ways to reshape cartilage without the use of heat and the associated risk of killing cells.

“We envision this new technique as a low-cost office procedure done under local anesthesia. The whole process would take about five minutes.” —Michael Hill, lead author of the study

The procedures most likely to benefit from this advance? Those that involve reshaping of cartilage, such as rhinoplasty and ear reshaping.

Will plastic surgeons be able to use electricity for nose reshaping in the future?

While this development sounds exciting, the truth is most rhinoplasty procedures include bone reshaping. In fact, Dr. Parker estimates that over 90% of his rhinoplasty patients need more than cartilage changes alone to achieve the results they desire.

Tiplasty may be better suited to the technology, but it will still take years for this or any other new option to be fully understood and tested. There are also many intricacies involved in rhinoplasty surgery (related to breathing and aesthetics) that likely can’t be replicated with a non-surgical option.

For now, patients are best off enlisting the expertise of a board certified plastic surgeon and choosing proven-effective procedures.

Patients who are interested in undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure, more commonly known as a “nose job”, should consider having genioplasty, more commonly known as a chin augmentation, at the same time, if this is appropriate. Patients should take into consideration how a rhinoplasty will alter their facial harmony, especially in relation to their chin. Dr. Paul M. Parker of the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery explains that patients with a “weak chin” will benefit from chin augmentation to “build out” their chin. Having both procedures done simultaneously allows your features to be better proportioned and reduces the chance you’ll a second procedure later on.

A rhinoplasty procedure alters the size, shape, and contour of the nose. The addition of a chin implant can allow the nose and chin to bring the face into balance. A chin augmentation is performed either by adding a chin implant to improve the profile or by altering the bone in the chin to make it more prominent. The procedure is brief and can give phenomenal results for rhinoplasty patients.

Many patients may not know that the nose-chin-neck relationship greatly determines whether or not your features seem to match up correctly. Having both a rhinoplasty and chin augmentation completed simultaneously makes a great deal of sense. Grouping the procedures together allows the patient to save some money on a combined procedure, and the patient can avoid having to endure two separate procedures and two periods of recovery. The combination of procedures is especially ideal for patients who want to make a small chin more prominent. By performing the alterations at the same time, plastic surgeons are able to ensure the results of each complement one another.

Stacey, a 59-year-old woman who primarily works outdoors, wanted to rejuvenate her appearance.  After extensive research and careful consideration, she opted to have a facelift and neck lift combined with a breast augmentation and a lip implant.

“I decided to have everything done at once to minimize my downtime.  I knew that I wanted to have these things done, and why should I spread it out and have to go through multiple recoveries? I work for myself and have a really physical job so I can’t afford to be out of commission for any length of time,” Stacey explained.

Stacey had eyelift surgery with Dr. Parker approximately 12 years ago and knew that if she ever decided to have more cosmetic surgery, she was going to return to the Parker Center.  Stacey explained that when she had her eye lift surgery, she absolutely loved the results.  After twelve years, Stacey felt she was ready for a facelift.

Stacey asked Dr. Parker what he believed would give her the best results. Following Dr. Parker’s recommendation, Stacey opted for both a face and neck lift in order to achieve the best results.  Dr. Parker also said that he could add the lip implant to complete the look.

“I’m thrilled with how I look.  When you find someone good and who knows what they’re doing, you stick with them.  Dr. Parker knew what I was looking for and he absolutely got it right.  I look and feel fantastic.  Why would I ever look anywhere else?  He’s a great surgeon. I listened to him, and I got great results,” Stacey explained.

The breast implants were something Stacey had been thinking about for a long time, and she’s really glad she did it at the same time.  She works with a lot of men and wanted to feel feminine. Stacey really feels that the implants have helped her with that.

“I look so good, and I’m so pleased.  Dr. Parker and his staff are fantastic! He listened to what I wanted, and I listened to him when he explained how he could achieve my goal.  I look and feel wonderful.  He and his staff are just the best.  You’ll never meet a nicer or more professional group of people,” Stacey said.

24-year-old Megan is a full-time registered nurse at a local hospital in New Jersey. She has always disliked her nose and has been self-conscious about it ever since middle school. While Megan’s nose was not large, she had a very rounded, fleshy tip that bothered her.

“While I’ve always hated my nose, I didn’t seriously start thinking about fixing it until I was in college. I knew that as soon as I had a full-time job I was going to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure,” said Megan.

Megan babysat a lot in college, and two of the women she sat for had surgery with Dr. Parker. Knowing that Megan was interested in a nose job, one of the women brought Megan to her appointment to meet Dr. Parker. As a medical professional, Megan really liked what she saw and how Dr. Parker’s patients were treated. Besides her in-person meeting with Dr. Parker, Megan also conducted a little research online. Megan believes that before and after photos are very telling of the type of work a plastic surgeon does. Megan was impressed by the natural looking results Dr. Parker was able to achieve with his patients.

“With all the women I knew personally who had very good results and the photos and information available on the website, I was confident that Dr. Parker was the surgeon for me,” explained Megan.

While Megan didn’t hide the fact that she was having plastic surgery, she didn’t really advertise it either. She was hesitant about telling her family, fearing that they wouldn’t support her decision, but they proved her wrong. Family, friends and co-workers were very supportive and made her feel even more confident about her decision.

Megan is absolutely thrilled with her new nose. She believes that it’s the nose she should’ve been born with originally. She loves that when she looks in the mirror she doesn’t see her flawed nose; she sees her whole face.

“The best part is the people who I didn’t tell I was having surgery. They look at me like something’s different, but they really can’t tell what it is. I love that! I think that it shows what a great job Dr. Parker did. I still look like me, just better. That’s exactly what I wanted,” Megan said.

As a registered nurse, Megan especially appreciated the Rapid Recovery Program that Dr. Parker has developed for his patients. A unique set of protocols, the program is designed to allow patients to return to their normal activities as soon as possible.

The Rapid Recovery Program includes a combination of treatments:

  • Oral medications given pre- and post-operation to reduce swelling and bruising

  • Short acting anesthetics to improve recovery time

  • Topical skin creams and manual lymphatic massage to decrease recovery time.

“My recovery was amazing. I was so fearful that it would be painful. I’ve told people that getting my ears pierced hurt more than this. I had very little bruising, and I really felt okay. I went home the first day and slept. Day two I hung around the house, but on day three I was out at the mall, shopping and lunching with friends,“ said Megan.

Megan was unbothered by her splint and had it removed one week post-operatively. She returned to work the following day. She believes that the Rapid Recovery Program really helped with speeding her healing and getting her back to normal quickly with almost no bruising and just minor swelling. Dr. Paul M. Parker and the staff at the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery have developed the Rapid Recovery Program with their patient’s busy lifestyles in mind. Their primary goal is to get you back to your demanding life with a minimum amount of downtime, little to no pain, and beautiful results.

Rhinoplasty or a “nose job” has always been a top cosmetic surgical procedure for both sexes.  In 2011 it was the most popular cosmetic surgery for men and the second most popular cosmetic surgery for women according to the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons).

“Rhinoplasty is a popular surgery because it has such a dramatic effect on a person’s appearance.  I believe that it should make a woman’s appearance more beautiful and a man’s appearance more handsome and masculine,” said Dr. Parker.

Rhinoplasty has been defined as the surgery that combines the art and the science of plastic surgery.  While rhinoplasty can be done for purely aesthetic reasons, it is also done to take care of physical defects of the nose.  Creating an aesthetically pleasing nose that is balanced and in harmony with the rest of the face takes a high degree of skill and experience.

”There are many differences between creating the optimal male nose versus the female nose.  The male face is heavier, squarer, and more pronounced than on the female face.  We work to create a male nose that is wider and straighter without the slight curve we give a female nose.  There’s also several differences in the tip of a male nose. It’s broader and fuller than a woman’s nose,” explained Dr. Parker.

Dr. Parker goes on to explain other differences in rhinoplasty surgery between men and women such as a female nose will have a supratip break (a slight depression just before the tip) and the male nose does not.  The angle of the underside of the nose to the upper lip should be slightly less in men than women.  Also the chin should be more prominent in men, and the skin of male patients tends to be thicker than women.

In a consultation with Dr. Parker, he will do an examination, listen to the patients concerns and explain a customized treatment plan.  The patient then meets with Liz Kolb, the digital imaging consultant at Parker Center.  Liz has seventeen years of experience and has been working with Dr. Parker for many years.  She will show patients just what they will look like after surgery through digital imaging software.

“The way Dr. Parker approached me when we first met was great. He was professional, knowledgeable and really made me feel comfortable. He was confident that he could give me exactly what I wanted, and he did. My nose is perfect. I looked exactly the way they showed me I would with the computer imaging before the surgery. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am,” said Larry, a rhinoplasty patient.

At the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty procedures are performed by Dr. Paul M. Parker at their on-site, state of the art, fully accredited, ambulatory surgical center, Surgiplex, LLC.  To learn more about male versus female rhinoplasty or any other cosmetic procedure visit our website dev.parkercenter.net .  For a consultation please call our offices at 201-967-1212.

Larry is a 23 year old who had always been unhappy with how his nose looked. As he got older, it bothered him more and more. Every time he looked in the mirror his nose was all he could see, and he had started to think that lately, it was looking worse.

“I was uncomfortable with my nose. I never liked my nose. It always bothered me, but now I was actually ready to do something about it,” said Larry.

Larry was poking around the internet one day and came upon Dr. Parker’s website. He read many of the patient stories and liked that there was so much information on Parker Center’s site. He also liked that there were stories from other men who had the surgery. On a whim one day, Larry called to schedule a consultation appointment.

Larry found the Parker Center and the staff to be warm, comforting and professional. He was very impressed when he met Dr. Parker and decided almost immediately that Dr. Parker was the surgeon he wanted. Dr. Parker felt the rhinoplasty would be a great success, and Larry could not have been more pleased.

“The way Dr. Parker approached me when we first met was great. He was professional, knowledgeable and really made me feel comfortable. He was confident that he could give me exactly what I wanted, and he did. My nose is perfect,” Larry said.

At the Parker Center, rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can take anywhere from 30 minute to 2 hours depending on the amount of work necessary. Patients are released to go home one hour after surgery and generally there is no pain.

“I had very little bruising and swelling the first few days. I went back to work after a week and by then the swelling was gone, and my nose looked great. At first, people were unsure about what was different. Some thought I had changed my hair, and others thought I lost weight. When they realized it was my nose that had changed, my friends were amazed at how good it looked,“ explained Larry.

New Jersey Rhinoplasty

Larry described Dr. Parker and his staff as “the best at what they do”. He loved the entire experience at the Parker Center, especially the three lymphatic massages at the Beaura Spa that were part of his surgery.

“Those massages were great. I truly believe that the combination of the medication for the swelling and the massages made my recovery a breeze. I looked exactly the way they showed me I would with the computer imaging before the surgery. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am,” Larry said.

Larry chose not to tell many people about his surgery, but the few close friends he told were amazed at how great he now looks. Larry has recommended Dr. Parker to friends and called the staff at the Parker Center “amazing.”

A nose that is too large can put other facial features out of proportion, and sometimes the best fix is a rhinoplasty. Dr. Parker, can balance the nose with the other facial features and create a more pleasing appearance. In males, a strong nose and chin are generally thought to be “ideal male” features. Dr. Parker often uses a chin implant to improve the balance. With a chin implant, the nose appears smaller, and the procedure requires less extensive surgery to correct.

Patients considering cosmetic surgery at the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery experience a comprehensive and educational initial consultation. Dr. Paul M. Parker believes that patient education is a cornerstone of his plastic surgery philosophy. Part of a patient’s education at the Parker Center consultation involves using computer imaging to visually understand their treatment plan.

“Patients often have a pre-conceived idea of what they’ll look like after plastic surgery. Computer imaging allows patients to see a realistic representation of what I believe to be their actual result. It also helps alleviate some of the fear and anxiety associated with plastic surgery,” explained Dr. Parker.

Liz Kolb is the expert photo imager at the Parker Center. Liz has over 17 years’ experience and thoroughly enjoys her job. In the past she worked for as a trainer for Canfield Imaging, a prominent manufacturer of computer imaging software equipment. Liz would travel around the country training plastic surgeons and their staff on using imaging software. For the past 7 years, Liz has worked at the Parker Center exclusively imaging Dr. Parker’s patients.

“Often patients will bring Dr. Parker photos of themselves from 10 or 15 years ago. These photos are great when working with facial rejuvenation patients. It allows us to see how patients previously looked and guides us in terms or restoring them to a younger version of themselves. I love seeing patients after their surgeries and just how close our computer imaging approached the actual surgical results,” said Liz.

Computer imaging is most effective with facial procedures and certain body procedures like liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Facial procedures which lend themselves well to imaging include eyelid rejuvenation, forehead lift, face lift, neck lift, rhinoplasty (nose job), otoplasty (prominent ear correction), chin implants, and liposuction of neck. Body procedures which lend themselves well to computer imaging include liposuction of the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, arms, and back. Our experience with computer imaging has been that it tremendously helps patients understand what surgery can and cannot do.

Many people are fearful they’ll look like someone else after plastic surgery. When patients see themselves during our computer imaging sessions at the Parker Center, they begin to understand that following surgery, they’ll still look like an improved version of themselves. It is important to Dr. Parker that his patients look natural after plastic surgery and our computer imaging shows them this, often giving them peace of mind. Computer imaging is a great educational tool to help lessen the fear of the unknown.

“Patients love seeing how they’re going to look. Dr. Parker is warm, professional and very clear in explaining to patients what surgery can accomplish for them. Despite this, talking with a doctor may create a certain amount of anxiety in some patients. Our computer imaging will reaffirm what Dr. Parker has told them in words and convey to them visually what cosmetic surgery can realistically do for them. Computer imaging is a really exciting part of the consultation for our patients. Being an integral part of this process and knowing that they’re going to love their results, makes my job very rewarding,” Liz said.

“We use computer imaging to enhance our communication with our patients. Often, patients will come back just before surgery to see the imaging again and relieve their anxiety. It really helps make patients more comfortable,” Liz explained.

Consultations at the Parker Center with Dr. Parker are comprehensive and free. Patients meet with Dr. Parker, who listens to their concerns, performs an appropriate physical examination, and then discusses options as well as a treatment plan. Patients also meet with Angela, our nurse coordinator, who spends time explaining the anticipated recovery. Liz will then show patients their anticipated results, based on what Dr. Parker has discussed with the patient, in the imaging session. Finally, patients meet with Michelle, our patient care coordinator, who discusses scheduling, costs and financing, if appropriate. Patients have told us repeatedly how comprehensive the consultation process is at the Parker Center as well as how helpful computer imaging has been to them to visualize their anticipated results.

Rhinoplasty New Jersey

Yvonne, a 61-year old mother and grandmother who works full-time, initially wanted to have rhinoplasty because of a deviated septum. After seeing an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) who said he would fix her deviated septum but not do anything else to her nose, Yvonne decided to see a New Jersey plastic surgeon.

”I’m Native American and I have the very strong ‘hawk-like’ nose. I liked my face and my nose, but it had a bump in it, and over the past few years, the tip has bent a little. I was looking for a plastic surgeon who would understand that I didn’t want a cute petite Caucasian nose, I still wanted to maintain my identity, just better,” explained Yvonne.

Yvonne had plastic surgery on her eyelids about 10 years ago but was not tremendously impressed with that surgeon and didn’t consider going back. She had driven past the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery several times and decided to look them up on the Internet.

“I was impressed with what I saw on the Internet.  It gave me a real feeling of the type of work Dr. Paul M. Parker does. You can tell from the before and after pictures that he is not one of those surgeons who has one nose style that he give every patient,” said Yvonne of the patients who had a rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty New Jersey

Dr. Parker asked Yvonne to bring photos of herself from when she was younger and photos of what she would like her nose to look like.  Yvonne brought photos of her 31-year old daughter who has a strong nose minus the bump and crooked tip. The night before surgery Dr. Parker reviews each patient’s file, including these photos and computer imaging photos, to formulate his exact game plan for achieving the patient’s surgical goals.

“The first time I met him, I felt safe and confident that Dr. Parker was the right surgeon for me.  I knew that what I wasasking him to do wasn’t easy, and he really got it. He understood what I wanted, and he was sure that it could be achieved,” Yvonne said.

Yvonne also had Dr. Parker do a brow lift and a corrugator resection. A brow lift can erase the sagging skin and lines that make you appear tired or angry. A corrugator resection involves cutting the muscle between your eyes. This will stop or prevent the deep wrinkles and fine lines and that can form there. Many people use Botox injections to relieve these lines.  With a corrugator resection, no Botox is necessary.

In addition to the facial surgery Dr. Parker performed, Yvonne asked Dr. Parker if she was a good candidate for liposuction. She had always hated her abdomen and felt that her belly made her look older, really matronly.

“I asked Dr. Parker about having everything done at once.  It was never something he suggested.  I figured if I was going to be taking the time off from work, and he was ‘going under the hood’ anyway, I wanted it all done,” stated Yvonne.

Liposuction

Yvonne now has the nose she always wanted, and just three week after surgery, she is down two skirt sizes.  She feels her silhouette is that of a 20 or 25 year old and she feels amazing. Yvonne describes her recovery as mildly uncomfortable, but never painful, and easy to tolerate. Yvonne is happy to have had her procedures done in New Jersey. Rhinoplasty provided her with the natural, beautiful results she longed for.

“Dr. Parker is thrilled with my results but not as much as I am.  It’s spectacular, unbelievably good.  People now tell me,‘You look great,’ but they don’t really know what I had done, and that’s the way I like it. Dr. Parker and everyone there is the best, truly amazing,” said Yvonne.

Plastic Surgery New Jersey Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, released their 2011 Plastic Surgery Procedural Statistics Report. In this report, which was discussed on NBC’s “Today Show,”  the stats show that that across the board procedure rates are up 5% from 2010 for men and women. The rise in procedures may be a marker of consumer confidence, but recent advancements to popular surgeries, more non-invasive options on the market, and a greater cultural acceptance are all reasons that contribute to the fact that more people are going in for cosmetic surgery.
Out of the five top procedures, breast augmentation is still the number one most performed procedure. Approximately 307,000 procedures were completed last year. This is a 5% increase from 2010. The other top procedures were rhinoplasty, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and facelifts. In New Jersey, plastic surgery procedures have reflected these US trends as well.

Facelift is new to the list this year, replacing the tummy tuck as one of the top five in 2011. It hasn’t been on the topNew Jersey Plastic Surgery five list since 2004 and it is up 5% from last year. Plastic surgeons in New Jersey are seeing more men come in for this type of surgery, which may explain the increase. There are also more non-invasive procedures available. BOTOX is the most popular choice among men and women, with a total of 5.7 million procedures performed and an overall increase of 5% in 2011. Other procedures such as Juvederm have seen up to a 20% increase.

For a plastic surgeon, New Jersey residents have several options to choose from and many different facility types to research. The Parker Center for Plastic Surgery offers this consultation checklist to help their potential patients make the best decision in a plastic surgeon.
