In the non-surgical world, tried & true solutions are as popular as ever

Some surprising trending plastic surgery procedures (plus a few comebacks)

While certain procedures stayed consistent, there were a few surprises. Labiaplasty and vaginal plastic surgery, for instance, saw a whopping gain of 39% in the last year alone!

Facelift surgery made a comeback after a slight decline over recent years, for good reason. Despite the growing number of non-surgical anti-aging options available, facelift surgery remains the most effective solution for patients seeking more significant and lasting improvements.

Facelift is new to the list this year, replacing the tummy tuck as one of the top five in 2011. It hasn’t been on the top five list since 2004 and it is up 5% from last year. Plastic surgeons in New Jersey are seeing more men come in for this type of surgery, which may explain the increase. There are also more non-invasive procedures available. BOTOX is the most popular choice among men and women, with a total of 5.7 million procedures performed and an overall increase of 5% in 2011. Other procedures such as Juvederm have seen up to a 20% increase.

Willa is a 39-year old married mom of twins, who recently came to Dr. Parker for a New Jersey tummy tuck.  Willa had a history of gynecological surgeries first in her teens and most recently a hysterectomy at age 37.  All of these abdominal surgeries combined with a twin pregnancy had left Willa with no muscle or skin tone on her abdomen.  Tired of hiding her abdomen with clothes and people assuming she was pregnant, Willa decided it was time to consider surgery.

“I saw a plastic surgeon about seven years ago and he had told me that even 3,000 sit-ups a day would not get rid of the excess skin or improve my abdominal muscles.  I wanted to wait to have it done until after I was done having children.  So after my hysterectomy, I knew I was ready. I had been thinking about it for a long time,” explained Willa.

“My breasts have always bothered me. I am very petite so imagine trying to buy clothes with 36DDs,” says Joanne. “I could never wear the tops I wanted to.”

Men are having plastic surgery in record numbers. According to ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), in 2010 male cosmetic surgery increased 2% and men now account for 13% of all cosmetic surgical procedures.

There has always been more of a stigma about men undergoing cosmetic surgery. It was always thought to be just for actors or celebrities. Return to Activities in Ten Days

“My doctor had told me there was nothing that could be done about the skin, because I had always been overweight.  The skin had just stretched too much.  After the weight loss, I was a size 18 but I knew if I got rid of the loose skin, I could be a size 12 or even a size 10,” explained Patty.

Since Patty has kept her weight off for 4 years, she was considered a very good candidate for an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).  Tummy tuck surgery is not recommended as a weight loss tool.  It is recommended for women and men who have stabilized their body weight but still have excess baggy skin on their abdomen.  This surgery will remove the excess sagging skin and repair the stretched abdominal muscles due to pregnancy or weight gain, then loss.

“I’ve always thought about breast implants, but for the longest time, I was ok with what I had,” she says. “But, once my athletic body started changing so drastically after menopause, I knew it was time to act. There is often a male-imposed stigma when it comes to cosmetic surgery for men. New Jersey is the same as any other state in that guys may be embarrassed to let people know that they have had plastic surgery. While men want to look their best, they shy away from admitting to being enhanced. But for Eric, he didn’t feel any of this.

“I was in agony after my first liposuction of the abdomen,” she says. “And I think I had one post-op follow-up and never saw my surgeon again.”
